John is clear cut, providing no gray area – those that seek righteousness are of the righteous One, those that seek evil are of the evil one.  He pointedly says that a reason for Jesus’s coming is to destroy the devils work.  Their is good work and evil work, and continual a contrast and battle between the two.  We are heartened to contribute to good works, yet we know we can not go it alone.  Nor do we need to.  We have a faithful seed.  I appreciate the connection between verse 9 and 1 Peter 1:23:

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.” 1 John 3:9

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. ” 1 Peter 1:23

We are led through a living and enduring Word; we continue to grow through the blossoming of a faithful seed.
